In the past two-three decades, peptides have attracted increasing attention of researchers and pharmaceutical business. Along with the proven biological activity of many individual peptides that are basis for unique pharmaceuticals, the subtle regulatory effect of whole peptide pools was recently discovered. It's studied by separate knowledge area - proteomics that is a logical and functional continuation of genomic research.
Peptides are widely used for creation of medicinal, cosmetic preparations, vaccines (adjuvants, synthetic antigens), immunodiagnostics (peptide chips), targeted transport of drugs and other nanoparticles (theranostics), for scientific purposes (peptide mapping, structure confirmation, peptide probes) etc.
